1st/2nd generation iPod

1st and 2nd generation iPods have a profiled scrollwheel and 4 curved buttons around it. Other than the 1G model, the metal compartment of the 2G model goes around the ports at the top. The 1st generation iPod carries a 5GB or a 10GB harddisk. The 2nd generation carries a 10GB of 20GB harddisk.

3rd generation iPod

3rd generation iPods came with a horizontally placed row of buttons (with orange background lighting). A lot of different models vary mostly in thickness (due to larger capacity harddisks). 3G models have been produced with 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB harddisks.

4th generation iPod

4th generation iPods have the famous 'clickwheel' with integrated buttons. iPod U2 is also a 4G iPod. 4G iPods came with 20GB and 40GB harddisks. iPod U2 came with a 20GB disk.
iPod photo is a slightly updated 4G iPod. It has a colorscreen and a higher capacity battery This iPod kan be connected to a television set in order to show pictures saved on the iPod. iPod photo came with a 20, 30, 40 or 60GB harddrive. There is also a U2 version with a 20GB harddisk.

5th generation iPod (video)

The 5th generation iPod comes with a larger color screen, and has the ability to play video. This iPod can be connected to a television set to show pictures and movies. 5G iPod comes with a 30GB, 60GB or 80GB harddrive.

iPod nano
|
iPod nano is the ideal combination of iPod video and iPod shuffle. It comes in a 1GB; 2GB, 4GB and 8GB variety. It has a color display and uses flash memory instead of the harddrive used in the other iPods.

iPod mini

The iPod mini comes in two varieties. One carries a 4GB harddisk, and the other a 6GB harddisk. The mini was available in 5 colors (silver, gold, pink, green and blue). The 2nd incarnation of the iPod mini got enhanced electronics for a longer battery life (up to 18 hours).

iPod shuffle
|
iPod shuffle comes in a 512MB and a 1GB variety. Both use flash memory instead of the harddisks used in the other iPods. The new formfactor iPod shuffle comes in a lot of colors, but just one size: 1GB
